As you may or may not know, we are swiftly approaching the annual state mandated testing window. The SBAC, Common Core Standardized Testing, will be administered in May. Superintendent Cindy Martin issued a letter to all parents in our district regarding the standardized tests. On one hand, she mentioned some important benefits; on the other hand, she delivered information on how to remove your student from the mandated tests. Section 852 of Title 5 of the California Code of Regulations provides that a district and its employees “...may discuss the CAASPP assessment system with parents and may inform parents of the availability of exemptions under Education Code section 60615,” but the district and its employees “...shall not solicit or encourage any written exemption request on behalf of any child or group of children.” 5 C.C.R. § 852(c). If a student or parent asks “Do I really have to take this test?” educators may honestly answer “No” and inform the student of Education Code that gives parents the right to opt them out of testing. I am not here to officially support or encourage you to excuse your student from these tests. I may provide you with information about the procedure.
